ART BY TRANSLATION

Application deadline : January 29, 2017

First work sessions begins : March 7, 2017

Art by Translation is open to young artists and curators seeking to further their research through a postgraduate program dedicated to a specific theme. The first 3 year theme is: ⇾ Translation in the arts.

Applications are for the period March 2017 - March 2018 (extensible depending on projects).

Art by Translation proposes an experimental platform allowing projects to develop organically in various contexts and in different forms: artworks, architectural constructions, exhibitions, study sessions, symposia and publications with prominent invited lecturers. Its model breaks with the classical “research - exhibition - publication” chronology and aims to reconfigure the traditional boundaries between disciplines. It also discards hierarchal exhibition practices that situate “art education” and public events outside of the exhibition. The discussions, debates, and collaborations are expanded and engaged throughout the curatorial process, and materialized as part of the exhibition itself. The program stimulates collaborations and exchanges, encouraging the redistribution of roles and competencies. Projects (exhibitions, artworks, texts) are not considered as final results but rather as stages in a process and points of departure for further elaborations.

Art by Translation is organized by three institutions :

  • The Centre National Édition Art Image, Chatou / Pantin (CNEAI=)
  • The École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy (ENSAPC)
  • The École Supérieure des Beaux Arts TALM Angers (ESBA TALM Angers)

In partnership with :

La Galerie, CAC, Noisy-le-sec, Galerie Michèle Didier in France; The James Gallery, The Graduate Center (CUNY), Barnard College, Emily Harvey Foundation in New York; Fonderie Darling, Centre Canadien d’Architecture (CCA) in Montreal; Faculté d’Architecture La Cambre Horta, Université Libre de Bruxelles; California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Los Angeles; AiR 351 in Lisbon, Portugal.

With the Support of the French Ministry of Culture.

Three main projects will act as case studies or research models.

They will generate collaborative situations (March 7-17, April 18-28 and in the fall 2017) where all the artists, curators and scholars - both guests and participants in the program - will be invited to present their work to the others and to engage in the production of new works, both individual and collective.

The House of Dust by Alison Knowles will be presented at the ESBA TALM Angers (March 2017), the Fonderie Darling, Montreal (June-Aug 2017), the CNEAI= Chatou / Pantin (Centre National Édition Art Image) and La Galerie, centre d’art contemporain, Noisy-le-sec (Sept-Nov 2017). These exhibitions will be the occasion for the production of new individual and collective works, both during the seminars and workshops (March 7-17 and April 18-28) preceding the exhibitions and continuing throughout their duration. The exhibition The Singer Notes by Mel Bochner at the Michèle Didier Gallery (Sept-Nov 2017) will be the occasion to explore the relations between language and its contexts with the artist and scholars from the fields of Comparative Literature, Philosophy and Art History. Study sessions will be organized on interspecies communication with A Constructed World, Jeff Guess and Katarzyna Krakowiak.

Art by Translation produces an evolving research archive that grows and takes on different forms while adapting to different contexts. This archive serves as a basis for interpretation or reactivation rather than constituting an inactive memory of projects. Our website presents these archives along with documentation and publications from various events and productions.
