Quad
2017, table 200 cm x 200 cm x 80 cm, cubes 6 cm
Marble, sand, wood, silk-screened canvas
For the exhibition The House of Dust, Francisco Tropa composed a “domestic” version of his work, Quad (2008). As the title indicates, Quad is inspired by the filmed performance of Samuel Beckett, in which the movements of four performers are determined by a mathematical formula. Francisco Tropa moves four marble cubes without any particular guiding logic. At each step, a fine layer of golden sand is sifted over the cubes, thereby tracing the history of their previous positions. Contrary to Becket’s systematic exhaustion of permutations, Tropa introduces chance and the awareness of transformation of the object by its context. The exhibition guides can activate the work for the visitors with the aid of a score provided by the artist. With the support of the Jocelyn Wolff gallery.
