A HOUSE OF ROOTS

INHABITED BY LOVERS

Tyler Coburn has realised many projects in connection with the concept of "resonant frequency," the physical principle that certain objects have a particular frequency. Exposure to this frequency produces vibrations that can destabilize them and even lead to their destruction. What's particularly interesting is how this concept illuminates the dynamics of interpersonal relationships—for example, through recent neuroscientific research into the role of limbic resonance in the phenomenon of love. For this exhibition, he interprets the above quatrain in a series of performances, each intended for a single participant. These performances take the form of directed conversations that create a "resonance" between the artist and the participant. By exploring interpersonal frequencies, the artist creates what he calls "temporary architectures," which build on historical and biographical roots.
